I've been in a book club for almost 6 years. It's not an "official" book club or anything, it's just me and my two besties from college. I think it started when we all decided to read the same book (Lolita) and ended up talking about it once we finished (EPIC!) and discovered a love for both reading and critiquing. We decided to take turns picking books and Skype about them after. Then when we discovered Goodreads, we became hardcore. I made a page for our book club and put all our books on it. I've bought every book we've ever read (some not pictured because I ran out of room!)
I couldn't think of a name, so somehow I ended up with "Book, Bitches!" Then they wanted a summary of our group, so naturally I put "We read books, bitches!" and what started as a temporary joke, ended up sticking. We even have T-shirts:
I'm not even joking, this shit is REAL! We also have fancy engraved bookmarks.
Seriously.
Although the name is super dumb (my fault), I will admit the book club has kept us all in contact when things get hectic. I'm finding the older we get, the busier we get (unfortunately), and we read less and less each year. However, I'm sure if it wasn't for the book club, we would probably have lost touch with each other by now.
Since one of my Bitches lives in Los Angeles, we don't get together much, but she comes up to The Bay once a year for our Girl's Weekend Extravaganza! We shack up and do an all-out, themed book club in person! This year, the book we chose for our in-person meeting is called:
Not the best theme we've ever had, since we ran out of time and panicked (it's about Nazis), but we'll work with what we got (at least they're in France). *DISCLAIMER* We're one trick ponies when it comes to books. We typically go for depressing historical fiction, which isn't for the faint of heart. I literally cry out loud when reading sometimes. This one is pretty hefty, so hopefully there are at least 3 ugly cries in there somewhere:

That's 530 pages...yum! If I were a superhero and had to use my natural, God-given abilities for my power, I wouldn't be super strong or a math genius. I would have the power to read really fast. I wouldn't be able to save you if you were drowning, or stop a murderer in his tracks. I would be the one sitting in the corner with my novel, while the world was in turmoil, drinking in the words at lightning speed. So, not a totally useful skill in the grand scheme of things, but in my everyday life my reading skills make me pretty efficient. I have to credit my mom with that one. She made sure I knew my letters (and numbers) at a super young age. I could actually read when I was 3 years old. The very first book I ever read was Green Eggs and Ham. On a side note, if you have kids make sure they read Dr. Seuss. His books have a completely unique, whimsical quality I've never seen captured anywhere else. He created amazing worlds and creatures that were a joy to me as a kid. Plus, the psychedelic drawings totally distract you from realizing that you're learning valuable life lessons. And let's be honest, who doesn't love a book that rhymes?
Anyway, I have about 2 weeks until our Girl's Weekend in order to finish this book, so I think I'm in decent shape. I'll let you know if it's any good, or how loud I sob.
