We've been in Jaco a month now and I know people say vacations fly by, but for us it has felt like a year. Not in a bad way, but the days just take their time here and with less to do (no jobs), it's just been a nice, slow crawl. Not to mention, when vacationing for a year, it's less of a balls-to-the-wall party and more of an easygoing lifestyle. We have to find a way to live without getting burnt-out or going broke. It hasn't been an easy transition (it's harder than you'd think to be unemployed and have no responsibilities), but it's been good for us.
I can honestly say we're pretty well acclimated and it's a nice feeling not to feel like such a fish out of water. Costa Rica is far from being home, but we're enjoying our temporary replacement. We have decided to stay in Jaco for the remainder of our time in Costa Rica (1 month). We really like our apartment, complex and landlord, not to mention the town and the beach. We've visited a lot of other beach towns and Jaco is more our style: gritty, kinda touristy, easily accessible on foot and absolutely breathtaking. We're also pretty centrally located on the map. We can go north or south easily, as well as east to San Jose, if necessary. Maybe we're biased because this is where we've found a home, but why give up a good thing?
I'm sitting on my little patio and while writing this, I'm watching a tiny yellow bird build a nest. She's collecting scraps and leaves and twigs and flying them up to her private palm tree and she's made herself a cozy, little nest.
I think little things like this are what's incredible about Costa Rica. I can sit on my patio and watch a bird build a nest or sit on my bed and watch a gecko (yes, we have a gecko-I named him Greenly) crawl up the wall. Nature is everywhere and somehow it's reassuring knowing that the world keeps on turning regardless of the turmoil surrounding it. It sort of makes you feel small, and it's good to feel small sometimes. There's so much going on right outside your door, it makes your issues seem insignificant in comparison. I can watch a bird build a nest and somehow she's rebuilding my perception of life at the same time. Corny enough for ya? Anyway, there's something to be said for the calming effect of nature, which I've never really taken the time to appreciate before now.
This has been Deep Thoughts With Sharmeela.
I'm off to dip my body into the pool.

Enjoy it while it lasts a year will fly by. It's already April! Feels like we just had New Years.
