South of Palermo: Part II

Sorry about that!  Back to the bird room:
The bird skeletons were neat:
Parrot:
Toucan:
Hummingbird:
A monkey in the bird skeleton exhibit (I mean, come on!):
Reptile room:
More skeletons (the dis-order of this place is like a joke!):
Stuffed mammals:
Giant whale:
Remember the cute, fuzzy Mara we were feeding at the zoo?
Well, here's a corpse of one!  You're welcome!
Last but not least, the rocks and minerals room:
I want countertops of this one day!
Look how many shelves of rocks they had:
Who knew there were so many different kinds of rocks??
Okay, we're finally done with the natural science museum!  I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

We then walked the circumference of the park while figuring where to have dinner.  I picked the place most recommended in my book: Sarkis, a middle eastern restaurant.  The only problem is that we were about 20 blocks away.  Off we walked (yes, it was rough again)!  We got there around 7:50pm and they opened at 8pm, so we added our names to the list and waited outside with the rest of the hoard of people all huddled together.
You would have thought Beyonce was giving out $100 bills with her face on them!  Except I wouldn't have waited for that.

We got a table 25 minutes later and the next problem we had was that we didn't really know much about middle eastern food and the entire menu was in Spanish!  The waiter (AKA our savior!) noticed us taking forever looking things up on our phones and brought us an English menu.  YES!!  However, as it turns out, even in English we didn't know what many of the items were.  We ended up making somewhat educated guesses.

Our appetizer was keppe with cooked meat and onions, parsley and spices.  I'm not positive what keppe is, but it seems like a ground beef that is usually raw.  Yup, you heard me, they eat it RAW!  We opted for a cooked version and man oh man, I would've eaten it raw it was SOOOOOO GOOD!
It looks weird and kinda like a meat patty pie, and maybe it was, but it was insanely good.  I can't even describe the flavor!  It tasted like really tender ground beef with just the perfect flavor and the raw onions on top just made it.  Perfection.
Next, entrees.  I got moussaka pretty much because I've had it before and I knew what it was.  Moussaka is like a beef lasagna, but instead of noodles, you've got strips of eggplant.  It was bathed in tomato sauce and tons of cheese (I walked miles today, so I'm eating what I want!):
It was the best moussaka I've ever had.  The eggplant at the bottom was perfectly caramelized and each ingredient had a perfect flavor to compliment the rest.
Aaron also went for a "safe" choice with a red pepper stuffed with beef and rice (this was a really beefy meal):
The pepper was super tender and skinned!  However, the filling tasted odd.  We think it might have been raw meat (it was hard to tell because the texture didn't feel raw, like it had steamed a little in the pepper) and we were not huge fans.  Aaron stomached one quarter of it and we tossed it as soon as we got home.  Unfortunate.
Overall, I have to say this was an unbelievable dinner (raw meat aside) and I think it's been my favorite so far on our entire journey!  Aaron doesn't necessarily agree and I can't blame him because raw beef is NOT the business!

After dinner, we were ready for some night action and I'd heard about an interesting place (in my book, of course) and we just had to see it.  This time we took a cab.  Acatraz is a gigantic, 4-story restaurant-sports bar-pool hall-bowling alley.  It was quite something.
Bowling alley and arcade:
They had a stage for small concerts:
Restaurant/bar and pool tables:
The 3rd floor had a bar and more pool tables:
These pictures are ridiculous, but it was awkward to take pictures where people could obviously tell I was taking their picture.  They need to come up with something that lets you take pictures incognito.  I would use the hell outta something like that!  You have NO idea how many funny/dirty looks I get from people weirded out by my picture-taking.  Probably because I take pictures of things that no one would think to take a picture of.  You're welcome, people!
Anywho, we bowled a couple games.  I was really rusty the first game, but brought it back in the second (Aaron still beat me, GRRR!!!):
See?  I was winning at first!
and then I lost on the last round.
We played a couple games of pool after bowling and I have to say, I'm getting better.  I'm by NO means a good pool player, but when I started ( a couple months ago) I couldn't even hit the ball and now I can actually make them into the holes occasionally!  Yipee!  The thing I have going for me is that I'm a lefty, so I'm ambidextrous and can shoot with either hand.  Again I didn't say I could do it well, but at least I suck equally with both.

Then around 1am, it was PJ time (the feeling just hits me sometimes: WTF am I doing that I'm not in PJ's right now??!  At that point, I know it's time for me to get on home.).  We grabbed a cab and headed home, which is where I now sit (in PJ's).  Tomorrow (well, now it's today) will be a relaxing day and Sunday we will go to the Sunday feria (market) in the neighborhood of San Telmo.  Get excited because it's gonna be awesome!  Nighty night!
