We're leaving for a short trip (anywhere from 3-7 days) to Montezuma tomorrow. We wanted to pack as light as possible, since we're going by boat and we're staying in a local hostel. We decided to only bring our backpacks (Aaron's only bringing his small backpack), so this should be interesting.
We're packing for a week, even though we're only really planning to stay 3 days. In Costa Rica, you just never know where the wind will take you. In my backpack, I've got:
A bathing suit, 2 tops, one dress, a pair of leggings, a weeks worth of underwear, a few pairs of socks and a bra. As far as toiletries:
I'm bringing my contact lens stuff, floss picks and Q-tips, deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush. Aaron is packing the soap. I also have:
Random stuff like band-aids, antibacterial wipes, sunblock, my headphones, hand sanitizer, my inhaler, hair ties (just all the stuff that stays in the backpack at all times). Other essentials:
My iPad (for reading/watching Netflix), my Costa Rica travel guide (which has been a Godsend! I use it constantly) and my tiny purse with cash, a copy of my passport (we never carry the real thing!), a credit card, keys to our house and our boat tickets. I'll pack my phone and iPad chargers later. Lastly:
sandals for the beach (I'll wear my tennies). I like to pack them in a plastic bag and I like to have extra plastic bags for dirty/wet clothes. Here's my bag all packed up:
Doesn't look heavy at all! Perfect! Aaron's packing pretty much the same stuff, just adding all his Go-Pro essentials (head mount and chest mount in case we go snorkeling).
In other news, Aaron went to the bar to play pool last night (I wasn't in the mood) and he met some really cool people. He even made a new Costa Rican BFF named Roberto. Roberto introduced him to this other guy that makes his own crafts out of wood, steel or plants. He made Aaron a random plant hat (Aaron said it took him mere minutes (of course he didin't get ANY pictures!)):
I actually like the hat, it's super comfortable:
Yes, I'm a dork. He also got the guy to make something for me:
Aww how sweet! Now I know these are random and will wilt in a matter of days, but if his woodwork is as good as he claims, we might be able to get some authentic, personalized stuff. We'll definitely be checking that out at some point.
My new favorite food craze is bean and rice bowls. No, it's not a Costa Rican thing. It's an eating on the cheap thing. I made a pot of beans, a pot of rice (I did cilantro-lime, which is basically replacing some of the water with the juice of a couple limes and adding a ton of cilantro at the end), some ground beef (chicken or turkey would be much healthier) and whatever random veggies I had on hand. I take a bowl, pile in some beans, rice, ground beef, veggies and then sprinkle the top with cilantro, avocado, lime juice and a little diced yellow onion (cheese would be sooooo good!). Super cheap, pretty healthy and super yummy! A bean and rice bowl will keep you full for hours, so it's a good meal if you're eating on the cheap. It'll also last for days, so all you have to do is assemble and you have dinner! For a breakfast option, fry and egg on top. OMG!
Today, we are relaxing, getting ready for our trip (I still have to shave my legs) and we MIGHT be going to the beach so Roberto can teach Aaron how to surf. I'll be sure to get pics of all the wipe-outs!
