We rode an elephant yesterday.
Google+ even stylized one for me:
While it was absolutely amazing to see this gorgeous, giant creature, feel it's shoulder blades move underneath me, feel it's rough skin and course hair scratch my legs, feel it's wet trunk as we fed it bananas, I ended up feeling an overwhelming sadness. Just thinking about the life these beautiful creatures led: giving rides to tourists all day in the hot sun, having seats tied to their bodies with rope, having trainers that used fear tactics instead of love, living in probably crowded and unsanitary conditions made me sick. The whole experience left a really bad taste in my mouth and I totally regret doing it without having done more research first. I feel like I got swindled by horrible people and I feel not only really stupid, but really irresponsible. I have no plans to do anything like that again, unless I make sure it's a facility where the animals are treated fairly. I apologize to anyone offended (shit, I'm offended) and I promise I'll make it right somehow.
After our ride, we wanted to go to the movies, which has become one of our favorite things to do while travelling. I know it probably sounds strange and like a waste of time, but I think it's because it's something normal that reminds us of home. We spend our days sleeping in, going to the beach, riding elephants and seeing sights, and believe it or not, simply going to the movies is the best. It's like the travelling version of comfort food.
We stopped at Big C to get snacks and saw these babies:
They're century eggs! I've seen these on An Idiot Abroad (of course they made Karl eat them) and I guess they're really, REALLY old eggs and they're supposed to be a delicacy (Karl immediately puked). These weren't that expensive, so I'm not sure if they're the same thing, but either way don't they look delightful? We opted not to puke at the movies, so we just got candy.
We saw The Martian (absolutely fantastic!) in this theater:
Not only was it gigantic, but it seemed really fancy! It's assigned seating (pretty much everywhere we've been in the world does assigned seating at the movies, but you get to pick your seats) and you can even get a sofa for two! They looked pretty comfy too!
Anyway, the movie was great! The story was riveting and all the actors were believable, even though they were on Mars (kudos Matt Damon, I liked them apples! (Good Will Hunting, anyone?)). You gotta go see it!
While we were downtown we also got our Indian food fix. Now, I'm Indian and I like Indian food, but at the same time I grew up eating Indian food, so it's not really anything to write home about. Aaron, on the other hand, has grown to love Indian food. However, let me tell you, Thailand has some Indian food worth writing home about (I literally texted my dad afterwards).
Tandoori prawns:
Garlic naan and chicken tikka masala:
It might not look like much, but it was delectable!
I thought this sign on the beach was crazy:
Scary!
This giant moth was also crazy:
Yuck!
Other than that, nothing else to report. Special shout out to Back To The Future fans: today is October 21, 2015, the exact day they traveled to in the future! I'm gonna go re-hydrate a pizza!
Cool but I thought the elephant looked happy but you're probably right.
