The Perks of Being Unemployed

A few days ago, we stayed up all night and had a movie marathon (we have no jobs, okay, it's not that weird) and it was about 6am when we finally got into bed.  I made a joke about us staying up and going to Park Guell (it's free to get in from 6am-8am) and Aaron was actually into it, so we ended up going.  Wow, wasn't that great storytelling on my part?  This is the part Aaron would go: "Great story, babe.  Now go make me a sandwich."  And then I would murder him, make a sandwich out of his body parts and eat it.  Now, that's a script in the making.  Okay, let's go to Park Guell before I do something I'll regret.

Park Guell

It was dark when we left home:
We took a cab and got there around 7am and NO ONE WAS THERE!  It was the best!!!  As a reference, let's look at a picture from last week when we tried to go during the day:
Packed with losers!  Okay, now let's see what it looked like when we went:
YAY!  It's just us!  We could go streaking and rub our butts on all Gaudi's creations and no one would know (not that we would ever do that...wink).
View from where I was standing up there:
I don't know what they were before, but now the house on the left is a museum and the one on the right is a gift shop.  Neither were open at the time of our visit.
The stairs:
I like to take pictures of the signage, so I don't have to remember any information in my brain.  This says it better than I could anyway.
I took this picture on our way out, so other people had caught onto our scheme.
On the way up the stairs, you encounter this guy:
No idea his significance, but in all the gift shops are geckos.  Gecko everything because of this fella.

Okay, let's get serious!  This is an important UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Gaudi's most famous works.  Actually, it was supposed to be a upper-class residential area, but it failed.  Guell commissioned Gaudi to design it and once it was done, no one wanted to live there, so Guell and Gaudi both had houses and that was it.  First up:
Here are the columns:
You can see how the outer ones are slanted:
Ceiling:
Mosaics, of course.
On the side of the Hypostyle Room, is a garden:
It goes WAY up there.
Then we walked up the stairs along the side and walked on top of the Hypostyle Room.  Walking up the stairs:
Voila:
Views were amazing:
We walked down the stairs on the other side and saw this:
Roof:
It doesn't look like any of those stones are held in place by much (although I'm sure they are).  Quite a trip.
We saw Gaudi's house (now a Gaudi museum):
Museum was closed, so we didn't get to go inside.
View from above Gaudi's house.
Guell's house is a large, white house way up on the hillside and we didn't walk up that far, sorry.
That's Park Guell!  Nailed it!

We went home and slept pretty much all day.  Later that evening, we went to the grocery store and played my favorite foreign grocery store game:

Is That Food?

First up, some packaged squid and octopus:
Not super weird, but I don't think I've seen this at Safeway.
Next up, imitation crab lunch meat:
Now, that's weird.
Finally, a rabbit:
Crazy!
We (unfortunately) didn't get any of that stuff.  We just got "normal" aka boring stuff and I made a fried rice:
Yum!

Night Out

Thursday night we decided to hit the town and I took horrible drunk pictures.  Here's the bar/nightclub area near our house:
The problem with our area is that everything is rather expensive and everyone is rather stuck-up.  We couldn't even get into some of the bars because I was wearing sandals and Aaron was wearing shorts and sneakers.  Man, we just don't fit in here.  We took a 5 minute cab ride to La Rambla and Plaza Real:
We went to a bar called Jamboree:
They had a DJ and a drummer, which turned out to be a winning combination:
We had a blast and the bar didn't close until 6am!  However, we paid for it the next day.  Only 10 more days in Barcelona!  The countdown begins!
Random gross picture: Since we don't have AC, we are forced to keep all the windows open at all times and the mosquitoes, although tiny, are vicious!  Aaron hasn't gotten bit at all, but I'm a walking pincushion!  Check out my feet:
My back and shoulders don't look much better.  I don't know what it is, but mosquitoes love me.  Grr!

Happy weekend people!
