Monday morning (6/29), we left our lovely apartment for the airport. Mauricio was there to say goodbye and walk us out. We will definitely miss having Mauricio around! If you're ever staying in BA and want a great apartment in a great neighborhood, look up Mauricio's Palermo apartment on AirBnb. You won't be sorry. Thanks for everything Mauricio!
Our first flight was from BA to Bogota, Columbia (about 6 hours). Here's our plane:Aerolineas was nice because we each had our own TV with free movies and shows. The food they served for lunch wasn't half bad either. They served a Shepard's pie kind of deal:
and a dulce de leche dessert:
I know they don't look like much, but both were not half bad. Surprising.
After 6 hours, we made it!
After 6 hours, we made it!
Hello Bogota! This is the most you'll see of Columbia because we had a 5 hour layover and no time to get out and explore. By the time we went all the way through customs/immigration, got a cab into the city and hung out for a bit, we would have to come right back, check in at the counter, go through security and get on the next plane. Not enough time! Instead, we sat at the airport and waited. We did get a new, weird chip flavor (it's like a thing we do now):
Now we're getting on a plane to Barcelona, Spain (about 10 and a half hours):
Avianca was another nice airline. We each got our own TV and the selection of movies was great! It was hard to fall asleep because there was so much to watch! They also served us dinner and breakfast, which was nice. The dinner was an orange chicken, carrots and rice (pretty good) and the breakfast was eggs and potatoes (grody). I did watch the movie Focus, starring Will Smith and it was so cool because most of the movie takes place in Buenos Aires and they really showed a lot of the sights we had visited! They went to the colorful houses in La Boca, they were in the San Telmo shopping area and they had a huge party in Palacio Paz! It was so cool! You should watch it and see if you recognize any of the sights! The movie was okay too, in case you cared (I didn't!).
We're in Barcelona!
The airport is all you will see of Barcelona because although we did have a longer layover here (about 8 hours), we didn't have enough time to do much, plus we had all our luggage and it was hot. Not Costa Rica hot, but much hotter than BA. Don't worry, we'll be back in Barcelona in a month. We did get more chips flavors:
The Lays were so good! IT was like a tomato and onion flavor that I would buy at home, if they had it.
We also got some Euros, since that's the currency in most of Europe.
Pretty cool! We didn't really like how the $5 was so much smaller than the others, like Monopoly money.
We stopped at a restaurant (we couldn't eat anymore sandwiches) and got a couple tapas:
I got some small sausages (not bad) and a goat cheese, sunflower seed, raisin salad (yum!) and Aaron got chicken nuggets.
Last flight!
Aer Lingus was the small, no TV airplane (probably because our flight was only 2 and a half hours). However, we were in great spirits because we were finally somewhere they spoke English! After 4 months of Spanish, we were SOOOOOO ready to hear English. And not accent, second-language English, but actual English we could understand! The best part was they spoke English first and did the Spanish translation second. All is right-side-up in my world again. I realize this makes me fit the arrogant, ignorant, entitled American stereotype, but I have to say I don't care! Try living in a country you don't speak the language for 4 months! It's very alienating. I'm just glad for a short break.
At one point during the flight, the captain said we could see Jupiter and Venus out the window on the left side of the plane. It was a rare sighting and one we wouldn't see again in our lifetime. Neat-o! Except we were on the RIGHT side of the plane and saw NOTHING! I tried to get a shot of the moon:
Awful! I also got a shot of part of the food menu (nothing was complimentary, even drinks! I did get them to give us hot water though, and I had my own tea bags, so suck it Aer Lingus!):
Okay, so they have a sausage sandwich, which seems very Irish, but they also had a "crisp sandwich," which was literally potato chips smushed in some bread. I'm sorry, that's a $5 sandwich??! Get me outta here!
Hello Dublin!
At midnight (Dublin time, which is 8 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time) on July 1, we were here! At long last! Stay tuned for Dublin!
Whoo hoo ready for Europe blogging!
